VRML - Virtual Reality Modeling Language

(V-R-M-L)

A standardized language used to transmit information about 3D images over the web (WWW). Since the image is built up on the local computer VRML information transmission is more efficient than sending the actual image. The image specification can also be set up so if a user clicks on a particular portion of a VRML file then another image is retrieved from the Web and replaces the portion clicked on.

VRML files are often called "worlds" and have the .WRL file extension. Although VRML worlds use a text format, they may often be compressed using gzip so that they transfer over the internet more quickly (some gzip compressed files use the .WRZ file extension).
