SMIL - Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language

(smile)

A protocol dedicated to presentation of multimedia over networks. The protocol allows the development of timelines, layout regions and options (e.g., one can serve different production versions depending on the bandwidth a user has). SMIL productions are typically delivered over "channels" (much like television). SMIL is based on XML. SMIL is displayed/authored using GRiNS, HPAS, or RealPlayer products (and likely more over time). An SMIL server needs to be able to use RTSP.
