Portable Network Graphics
(ping)
A bitmap format designed to take the place of GIF. Unlike GIF, PNG is not tied to compression patents and licenses. PNG graphics have a sample depth of from 1 to 16 bits. Since PNG is designed for on-line viewing it is streamable and has a progressive display option. PNG also allows for storing color data for color matching. The basic PNG specification, however, does not support animations.
