Page Description Language
(P-D-L)
Any language used to define the appearance of a printed page (or viewed page on a monitor). PDLs are independent of the hardware; translation is done by the hardware. For printers, a common PDL is PostScript. Note: HTML is not a PDL since the user has control of the display.
