National Science Foundation network
(N-S-F net)
A WAN that served to connect government, schools, and laboratories developed by the National Science Foundation. NSFnet replaced ARPANET. But, in 1995, NSF dismantled NSFnet in favor of what is now known as the Internet. NSF is working on a new, higher-speed backbone as the next generation network.
