A multimedia standard named for the group that created it. MPEG combines JPEG to compress individual images and a form of differencing where two adjacent frames are compared and only the difference information transmitted. MPEG-1 yields quality similar to a standard video tape playback and is also the basis for the MP3 audio format, MPEG-2 yields high-quality video. MPEG-3 was to be for high definition television but has been merged into MPEG-2. MPEG-4 is for low bandwidth video.
