Musical Instrument Digital Interface
(middy)
A hardware specification and method of encoding tonal information (protocol) for easy transmission between digital music devices. A MIDI connection is a high-speed serial connection with connections defined for MIDI in, MIDI out, and MIDI through for chaining purposes.
MIDI commands are short but fully represent complex sounds from various instruments. The simplest encoding is a note on/off event which also defines a pitch (note number) and loudness (key velocity).
An entire file format specification exists for MIDI.
