Light Emitting Diode
(L-E-D)
A display unit which emits light when a specific voltage is placed across it. The color of the LED depends on the material it is made out of. LEDs are everywhere (e.g., you probably have an infrared one in your television remote control).
LEDs are often used in electronic experiments. If connected improperly, they are often termed smoke-emitting diodes or friodes.
