Joint Bi-level Image Experts Group
(jay-big)
A group of experts dedicated to produce standards for bi-level image coding. The file format is a lossless compressed format that is robust; handling even progressive images (multiple resolutions in a single image). Some of the functional blocks of the standard include: Adaptive Arithmetic Encoder, Adaptive Template Block, Typical Prediction Block, Resolution Reduction Block, and Deterministic Prediction Block. The format typically results in small image sizes. JBIG handles images with up to 255 bits per pixel. JBIG compression steps double resolution where each resolution layer uses pixels in that layer plus some already-computed lower resolution pixels.
