Internet Protocol
(I-P)
The primary protocol for data transmitted across the Internet. A numerical IP address is given to packets of information going to the same place and used to route those packets to the correct location. The actual data packets may be fragmented during the routing but are re-assembled in the data link layer at the receiving site.
