Internet Information Server
(I-I-S)
A Microsoft web server designed to work with Windows NT and related operating systems. It is used on both intranet and Internet servers. Version 1.0 was released with Windows NT 3.51. A slightly modified version 2.0 came with Windows NT 4.0. Active Server Pages (ASP) and other improvements were added in version 3.0. Further improvements have been made in subsequent releases.
Despite improvements, IIS is known for having significant security holes that have had to be patched. At one point an important consulting group recommended that its clients drop IIS in favor of the free, open-source alternative: Apache.
