Enhanced Integrated Device (or Intelligent Drive) Electronics

A Western Ditigal 1994 (about) expansion of the original IDE specification that allows a major increase in the size of supported hard drives. Also called ATA-2 (AT Attachment), the expansion included faster data rates, 32-bit transactions, DMA in some drives, power saving modes, and removable devices. This was followed by ATA-3 and Ultra DMA (ATA-4).
