Electronic Data Interchange
(E-D-I)
Any of many methods used to allow one computer to exchange data with another computer without the need to manually enter the data into the receiving computer. For critical data, a third, trusted computer may be used as an intermediary. This logs the activity for verification purposes and, when necessary, can serve as a store-and-forward service if one of the computers is down.
