Digital Subscriber Line
(D-S-L)
Phone technology that allows high speed digital data transmissions over normal phone lines. With some implementations voice can also be transmitted over the line at the same time. DSL requires an investment in digital equipment by the telephone company. It is also limited by the length and condition of the line between the subscriber and telephone company.
There are a variety of DSL flavors. See xDSL for a listing.
