Compact Disc-Recordable
(C-D-R)
A type of drive that can produce both computer and audio CD-ROMs. These drives can also be used for backup purposes as multiple "sessions" can be placed onto a single disc. (Note: If the disc is to be read in an old CD-ROM drive only a single session can be used and it must be "closed.")
CD-R discs can only be written to once. Recording is performed by a laser which heats one of the disc layers to the melting point. This basically forms a pit that represents the digital bit being recorded. The substrate becomes visible in the pit and effectively "records" the bit in that the reflection pattern of the disc has now changed so the bit can be detected on playback.
[Spelling note: When applied to optical media you use "disc." When discussing magnetic media you use "disk."]
