Binary Digit
(bit)
This is one of those terms that started out as an acronym but quickly became a word in its own right. The original shortening was "bigit" but during World War II John W. Tukey coined "bit" during a mathematics conference. It first appeared in print in 1948 when Claude E. Shannon gave credit to Tukey in his paper A Mathematical Theory of Communication. (Tukey also coined the word software. He died at age 85 in July 2000.)
