Application Service Provider

(asp)

An company that sets itself up to provide computer software and services to others automatically via a network. Services can be things like billing, subscription management, and security. Software can be commercial or specialized. As you might imagine from the description above, the term is used in many different situations. When you hear it you should immediately try to clarify what's being talked about.
